WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A DOULA
A birth doula is a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and educational support to the mother, before, during, and after birth.
The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “woman who serves.” Quite literally, a doula hired for your birth is there to serve you, the mother, and support you and your family in any way she can.
While doulas are not primary caregivers, many pregnant women rely on doulas throughout the pregnancy period to help them sort through their choices to make their own informed decisions. The prenatal appointments are designed to assist you in educated and informed decisions, so you have a solid plan going into labor.
Doulas understand pregnancy and childbirth as a normal part of life, not a pathological condition requiring treatment. Doulas can focus on supporting the natural birth process and also advocate for the mother to create a birth plan for the hospital environment.
Doulas are not necessarily anti-intervention but focus more on education so the family can utilize those informed decisions for the best possible outcome regardless of what the Mom decides.
I am very comfortable in a hospital setting, for natural childbirth, the use of medications, or in the event of a cesarean.
Doulas do NOT:
- Replace the partner or caregiver
- Act as a medical professional, psychologist, or other mental health professionals
- Perform any clinical tasks such as checking or interpreting fetal heart tones, checking cervix for dilation or effacement, taking blood pressure, suggesting medications
- Provide belly massage to turn a breech baby
- Contradict caregiver’s advice
Doulas CAN provide the following:
- reduce the overall Cesarean birth rate
- reduce the length of labor
- reduce Pitocin use
- reduce the need for forceps delivery
- reduce requests for epidural pain relief
- decrease negative childbirth experiences and trauma
- work with you, to support your plan and your decisions
In addition to several Birth Doula certifications, and parenting since 1992 in the trenches on my own journey as a Mama, I am licensed as a Transformational Coach and NLP Practitioner through the ABNLP. I’ve received targeted training on topics such as crisis intervention, drug & alcohol addiction, surviving trauma, and suicide prevention, which has equipped me with a solid understanding of how to serve others experiencing trauma.
